Our Ear Wax Removal Methods

At Ear Care UK, we use two clinically recognised methods to safely remove ear wax. Methods are in line with nationally recognised NICE Guidance, quality statement QS185

Microsuction

Micro-suction is a modern, highly precise method of ear wax removal that uses a gentle medical suction device under direct visual guidance. A trained practitioner uses a microscope or magnifying loupes to clearly see inside the ear canal while carefully removing wax without introducing water. This technique is quick, typically comfortable, and widely regarded as one of the safest methods, especially for people with sensitive ears, perforated eardrums, or a history of ear problems.

Who should have Microsuction?

Microsuction is commonly recommended for people with:

  • Perforated eardrums (only in certain circumstances and following a consultation)
  • Previous ear surgery
  • Recurrent ear infections
  • Hearing aids

Ear Irrigation

Irrigation (sometimes known as ear syringing) involves flushing the ear canal with a controlled stream of warm water to soften and remove excess wax. The process is carried out using specialised equipment designed to regulate pressure and temperature for safety and comfort. It is an effective and commonly used method for clearing blockages, though it may not be suitable for everyone—particularly those with certain ear conditions—so a prior assessment is always recommended. This method would not be adopted where perforation or damage to the ear drum is identified.
